when is _______ coming out?
release dates are announced through my newsletter, posted on social media & listed here.
you can also follow my work in progress on the home page here -- at the bottom.
do you create your own covers?
yup! i have a background in graphic design and have been using photoshop for over 20 years. i enjoy the process. however, i do allow book boxes to take any liberties they'd like when designing special editions and enjoy seeing what others create for my books!
concept design is in canva, then i take it to photoshop to finalize design and format for print
any ideas on the next series you'll write?
I'll definitely be sticking to contemporary dark romance. most likely another military, four book series of some sort.
also, another fantasy book down the line as well.
what is your process?
i write in scenes and not linear, i skip around a lot, rarely will i outline but sometimes i will put up a timeline on a cork board to help organize the plot structure and make sure i get timing correct
draft zero > story development, telling myself the story
1st draft > bones of the story
2nd draft > elaborate, fill out & bulk up
*send draft to concept editor
3rd draft > edit, refine, complete story at this point
*begin formatting for print
4th draft > polish, finalize, last draft
*send to editor for final read through
*finalize formatting, upload to kdp
depending on book, this process takes anywhere from 6-12 months.
i use novlr.org for drafts 0-3, google word doc drafts 3-4 and indesign for formatting for print
are there any tropes you won't write?
cheating
love triangle that doesn't end in why choose
ya
sports
do you write when the inspo strikes or do you have a schedule?
both! i try and write everyday though, even if it's just a few words or a roughly written out scene. since this isn't my full time gig, yet, i'm very conscious of burnout. i take a few months off between my bigger books.
discipline is what made finishing my books possible, especially darling wildfire, so even when i don't want to write, i push through.
how do you come up with your characters?
they usually speak to me. i'll get a general idea of who they are and then during the writing process they'll reveal more and more about themselves. some are chatty and i learn about them right away, while others take longer to open up to me.
kraven was one who wanted me to tell his story but then refused to speak to me in depth about it for several months. on the flip of that, caspian (the prince from crossbones) was super charming and wouldn't shut up.
the characters usually surprise me as the story goes on and when writers say they sometimes have no control over what's happening, they're right. we're just going along with what we're told!
advice for aspiring authors?
